The fairkom team presented our challenges with SchulchatRLP - a fully encrypted matrix messenger for half a million pupils. We explained how we had extended FluffyChat and Synapse, built an IDM proxy and deployed on kubernetes. We also showed how we built scalable cloud infrastructure from scratch on premises including monitoring.

Watch the recording of our talk here.

The [matrix] protocol becomes the de-facto communication standard in the medical sector for fast, reliable and encrypted messaging. With Tchap in France and OpenDesk & BundesMessenger in Germany we see matrix arriving in the public administration.   Within the matrix ecosystem, fairkom seems to fill the gap as integrator and infrastructure specialist, when it comes to high availability requirements or connecting with other systems.;

We have also seen RocketChat integrating a native matrix server based on TypeScript (no e2ee yet), MLS as a way to do massive layer encryption for large call groups and "The Element in the room" offering closed source enterprise features like multi-tenancy and SCIM support. And yes, to many of us solution providers, it remains a challenge to keep the software components open but pay people working on it. We need to convince organizations and companies that switch to matrix, that they pay for custom extensions or apps, SLAs or at least sponsor the matrix foundation, as we do as silver sponsor.

Thanks to The Matrix.org Foundation as organizers of the #matrixconf2025 in #Strasbourg and the excellent food! See you next year maybe in Vienna!
